Most secure jobs in Aussie finance: part II

Credit analysts

As a consequence of the credit crunch banks are being far more stringent in the analysis and supply of credit for mortgages and interbank loans. “The role of credit departments has assumed greater importance and the additional workload has boosted hiring activity. We anticipate this trend will continue over the short term which bodes well for credit analysts/managers,” says Brad Shotland, associate director, financial services, Michael Page Finance.

Relationship managers

With a shift in focus away from debt-related business, banks are looking to increase their client base. Candidates with strong business development and relationship management experience are therefore in high demand, says Jane McNeill, senior regional director of Hays Banking. “A strong sales focus and the ability to develop a healthy portfolio are desirable qualities in this market, so senior relationship managers and business development managers are consequently resilient roles. Banking experience and the knowledge of deal construction are critical to these jobs,” she adds.

Risk

Dianne Wilson, a partner at Derwent Executive, says risk redundancies have been limited compatred to other support functions. Toby Aikins, a consultant at search firm Jon Michel, adds: “A risk job is one of the safest in the banking sector. There’s every indication that there will be continued demand this year. There is hiring still going on, both replacement and even pockets of growth.”

Insurance professionals

“In the present climate we have seen an increase in demand for experienced insurance claims professionals and would expect their workload to remain resilient for the foreseeable future,” says McNeill of Hays Banking.

Forensic accounting

Forensics is a “standout area” of the finance profession, says Jason Cartwright, general manager, client services at Link Recruitment. “Firms are expanding their forensic teams and we are also seeing movement in the senior ranks with partners moving firms and countries.”
